Kid Trips with BSA T165 @ Pace Bend on Nov. 19, 2011
BSA T165 from Round Rock's St. Phillip's Methodist Church camped at Pace Bend and met up with the 8 Kid Trips Posse at the East Trailhead on a comfortable 75*, cloudy day, with steady wind.
Thirteen scouts and 5 adult leaders patiently listened to the safety talk and IMBA rules, and learned about trail courtesy presented by Rick Chevrie. Just as the Jimmy Legs began acting up, we quickly fitted all the scouts with helmets and bikes. After a little experimentation with the new gear in the parking lot and final adjustments, they were off in 2 or 3 groups on the same route as the 10 & over ride at the Pace Bend Race in April. After one loop, they hit the clif bar and fruit energy snacks, refilled water bottles, and were raring to go for more miles. Two loops for 8 miles total, and they were hooked. Many scouts were eyeing Leif Dove's newly-built wood structures and ramps/jumps at the top of Powerline Hill, but that will have to be on their bike, on their own time, on another ride.
Don DeMellow, T165 Scout Master, thanked ARR for the wonderful experience and will spread the word to other BSA troops. Having the youth group camp at the trail makes the whole KT event go that much smoother.
From an email dated 11-24-11 from Don DeMellow:
