In spring 2016, the Austin Ridge Riders were approached by a neighborhood group and Keep Austin Beautiful to build a nature trail along east Williamson Creek. With the help from the City of Austin Parks and Recreation department, the permit for the new trail was granted! The route goes from Pleasant Valley Road to Stassney along the creek bed.
We plan to start trail clearing in January or February 2017. With ample volunteers, luck and good weather, the trail should be open by the end of 2017.
This trail will be a natural surface trail for hikers and bikers. There are already some trails along Williamson Creek west of Interstate 35. This could become part of a trail system along Williamson Creek across much of south Austin. Travis County has plans for a trail system in Onion Creek northward toward the South Walnut Creek Urban Trail. That is only a few block away from this new section. With time and persistence, we may have a well connected trail system that keep pedestrians and bikers separated from automobile traffic.
